November’s Song

The leaves are falling endlessly upon the the slumbering, November ground, a state of sleepy wonder.

They spin so softly as they fall, soft as summer rain, gentle as a first snowfall.

I understand this autumnal shower; the trees give all they have to give, a final kiss goodnight, before winter.

Yes, this is the eve of bedtime stories, silken leaves, that flutter before the golden break of dawn.

I dream the dream of November, again and again; the stories of days gone by slip effortlessly into my mind.

I cling to the tapestry of all those bygone autumns, stitched together by the radiant November sun.

In my soul, I feel the soft, whispering wind; I gather the bounty of autumn’s rich hues, the crimsons, the golds, the burnished coppers.

At dawn, the night long past, I sing a song of November; every fluttering leaf, every fluttering heartbeat, has a purpose.

The dance of the seasons is complicated, yet, so serene; we wake, we sleep, we awaken again.

The sun rises, and the sun sets, and man does much upon the earth in the hours given to him; amidst the toil, and the comings and goings, the Song of November plays on and on.

John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, as to give His only Son; that whosoever believeth in Him, may not perish, but have life everlasting.”

Psalm 90: 4: “A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night.”

2 Peter 3:8: “But Beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing; that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.”

  1. Lovely photos to set up the nuggets in your post. This is my favorite time of the year. I love walking through the fallen leaves. God’s grip – Alan

    1. It is a beautiful season! 🙂 Enjoy those walks in the fallen leaves…wherever you look, it is like a picture-perfect autumn postcard!

    1. The changing canvas of the seasons is a beautiful thing to behold. 🙂

  2. It is such a beautiful season and this was beautifully written! Loved it!

    1. Thank you! 🙂 We have had our share of heartaches in this year 2020; when we focus on all that is good in our lives, and the beauty all around us, this pandemic year is easier to endure.

  3. So, so beautiful Linda! Autumn, November and this time of year is my absolute favourite. It’s magical.

    1. It is magical! The landscape turns to gold, and the light is incredible!

  4. what a fitting tribute to November, a month of change and beauty! Love your poem, shots and that cute little angel in the garden … just lovely 🙂

    1. Thank you Kate! I love that little angel! At Christmastime, we put lights in that garden; sometimes, in winter, we get snow and the little angel is snow-capped! That is my Azalea garden, which is beautiful in the spring. Still, in winter, it is really awesome!

      1. she adds a quiet sacred presence to your garden, tiny but exquisite … I will look for something similar for my garden 🙂

        1. It is one of my favorite things in the garden. I also have a little concrete frog and toad sitting beneath an umbrella; unfortunately, the umbrella broke off with age, and the little toad always seems to roll off in a storm. Too funny, yes? I have spent much time searching for that toad that does not stay put! 🙂

          1. lol poor beggar he’s trying to escape but still you keep him captive 🙂 Might be time to replace that one … I must look for some interesting characters for my garden now!

Most here are large and crass 🙁

  5. This is a very different take on November than what I’m accustomed to–and a welcome one.

    1. We have had a beautiful November in Virginia this year! Today, we have rain and the landscape is a bit of a blur. But, we have had the most amazing sun-lit days…

      1. Now that I think about it, our New Hampshire November this year is unusual for the sun and color. It’s usually gray and bleak.

        1. I cannot remember a more beautiful November than this one. Considering the circumstances of our lives, it has been such a blessing.

          1. That was my thought as well. A blessing.

  6. I read your post the day it came out and although it was to be a busy day, I was immediately and sufficiently chastened to slip away before work and spend some minutes staring up at the quiet skies.

Today, I read this a second time, at the end of a workday that closed at night. I feel like I’ve given my all for this week, too much, likely. Amends must be made for even the birdsong is muted to my ears now, and that’s never a good thing.

    1. I know you will hear the birdsong again loud and clear! It is good you spent time looking up into the sky. It is in those quiet moments that we find our peace. I often think of the opening lines of William Wordsworth’s poem: “The world is too much with us late and soon…” When the weight of the world is too heavy, we must pause, we must pray, if only for a moment. I believe it is in these moments of quietude that we find ourselves again, and can carry on.

  7. Wow! This is SO pretty, Linda! ” final kiss goodnight, before winter.” Just lovely. Thank you <3

    1. Thank you! I was very inspired by our trip to the mountains. 🙂 Every tree is a work of art; every leaf has its own beauty. Nature has so much to teach us about life, and one another.

  8. How lovely, Linda! November is often seen as such a depressing month….I love how you turned that around!

    1. It really is a beautiful month in so many ways. It heralds the upcoming holidays for one thing. Most importantly, it is a time to really reflect on how blessed we are. The trees shed their leaves; we move forward as well, leaving behind all we cannot control. In November, we begin to dream of the New Year, just around the corner. The days grow shorter, but our dreams, not so much so.

  9. Beautiful, as always, Linda! You paint the loveliest pictures with your words. The seasons each bring their own glory. How quickly they pass from one to the next. Bless you!

    1. Thank you Melissa! Wishing you a blessed Thanksgiving and a good start to the holiday season!
