Baby Steps

Our little grandson is two weeks old already! We have so enjoyed this time, marveling at his tiny feet, tiny hands, and beautiful smile. It is always hard to believe just how small a newborn is, and how fast they grow!

Day by day, week by week, month by month, babies grow into toddlers, and kindergartners, and before we know it, they are graduating from high school! And it all happens, one step at a time.

Baby steps can be good steps for our lives, and our dreams as well. Sometimes, if we just take it one step at a time, the impossible, becomes possible. When we look too far ahead, we can become overwhelmed. If we don’t keep taking baby steps, we might not get anywhere.

The funny thing is, all the little steps make a difference. At times, we may feel like we are just spinning our wheels. Still, as we push on, the dreams take shape before our eyes. Like a mosaic we work on, one part at a time, it all eventually comes together.

The baby steps are crucial steps. It is how we make a new beginning. The steps build one upon another, and a staircase is built, day by day. These stairs allow us to climb and make our way in life.

Like a toddler who must sometimes take a tumble, and get back up again, so must we. The important thing is to keep going. The Chinese proverb of Lao Tzu rings true: “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

We step out in faith, knowing that we do not walk alone. Our steps matter; our own individual journey matters. No two journeys are exactly alike, because we are all of us, one of a kind. The staircase we choose is uniquely our own.

Perhaps, that is the most important thing to remember. Choose the steps that are right for you. Choose the journey that brings you the most joy. And celebrate right now, wherever you are on the staircase. This is your one awesome and beautiful life on this earth before you enter eternity with God.

Even with all the hard things we do not understand, and the pains we must endure from time to time, our journey is still amazing. If you look carefully, you will find the most enchanting people and places in your midst at every step. You will know that there is nothing ordinary about your passage. You will discover that God’s divine love infiltrates all that you do, and all that you are.

I love the words of Jesus when He spoke to his Disciples: “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”: Mathew 19:20. It brings such clarity to our daily lives when we are afraid to take the next step, or when we seem to falter and lose our way. What a blessing to know that God steps along with us, one baby step at a time, so full of love and pride for his children. He watches over us, just like we hover over those toddlers in our own lives…children and grandchildren, taking those all important steps in growing up and becoming all that they can be.

  1. If there’s one regret I have of the time the kids were mere babies, it would be that I lived so much in the shadow of fear. I had no confidence in myself as a mother and trembled over everything.

But God built me with the ability to laugh, lots of it. The slightest lift of fat legs and roly poly baby arms made me smile, the funny sounds only a baby makes could make me laugh.

Because of that, I have a ton of utterly beautiful memories of those golden days.

    1. I am so glad you have those beautiful memories! They are ‘golden days’, as you put it, a time set apart. Laughter is a cure for many things. I agree that babies make us laugh, and smile! We are young when we have our children, and older when the grandchildren arrive. God gives us gifts, each in their time. When we see that the next generation is at that step of starting a family, there is so much joy. The days are golden again, but with ever-deepening circles of love.

  2. a lovely post highlighting a crucial point, baby steps make a huge difference and get us through our troubled times πŸ™‚

    1. It has been said that when you are not sure where to step, take the one that seems like the best next step for the moment. That way, you do not stagnate. Often, we simply have to make a decision, but not every decision is written in stone. We must give ourselves the grace to tweak the changes as we go.

      1. absolutely and be wary to tread lightly until we are sure of our decision πŸ™‚

        1. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

      2. yes, I read that above πŸ™‚

  3. Yes, baby steps are how we all began! And if we’re wise, it’s also how we continue on. It’s so hard to find the nerve to make huge changes in our lives, but if we can just start with one small change, who knows where it will lead?

    1. Yes! Dramatic changes can be hard. Little change-ups as we move in the right direction are empowering.:)

  4. What a beautiful life update (I love babies!) and a beautiful life application. Yes, those baby steps are what get us from one place to another most of our lives. Only on rare occasions do we zip and zoom. Instead it is the day by day, little by little moving in step with God, that draws us to Him and brings fulfillment.

    1. I agree with you…on rare occasions we zip and zoom! But when we look back at our lives, we see the journey is sometimes in starts and stops as well. There are places where we pause and start again. With the help of God, our lives move in step with him. Psalm 32:23-24: “The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way; though he falls, he shall not be cast headlong, for the the Lord upholds his hand.”

  5. Oh yes! I appreciate this insight. I think of it as layering as well. Learning a little at time; making small changes each week; cultivating new habits more each day. It all adds up! πŸ™‚

    1. The daily habits and changes make a difference over time. It takes patience!I have to work very hard at being patient with myself. πŸ™‚

  6. So true! As adults, we can learn from the example of our little ones’ baby steps.

Thanks for sharing the blessings your grandson has brought you.

    1. We are enjoying all the baby steps along the way! πŸ™‚
