I waited for the rain to come; the clouds gathered and stirred, but still, not a drop.
I waited, the sky a silver palette, deepening into a swirling, charcoal grey.
I waited, as if for a ship to come into a harbor, seeing it far off, making its way.
All at once it began, the pounding of so many drops, a tin can band playing on the roof.
Hours and hours of that steady tapping, beading on the windows, and making estuaries in my yard.
The estuaries are everywhere, forming little rivers that ebb and flow; I watch the rivers run, all that water flowing endlessly into a sea.
I could wade in that sea, but I think not; instead, I will sway to the music of the band upon my porch, an island all my own.
This is a port I call my home, set within an emerald cove; from here, I can travel anywhere, but still, it is a lovely place to be in the summer rain.
Absolutely gorgeous description Linda.
Thank you! 🙂 There is a part of me that loves the rain. Sometimes, I take my dog for a walk in the rain, and we are both happy! Odd, because we get very wet, and there is nothing quite like a wet dog! Still, the earth smells so fresh, and the dog is so exuberant, I just forget that it is raining. It is magical in its own way…
captured the atmosphere perfectly from your sanctuary 🙂
The rain is a beautiful thing. My youngest son used to tell me that rainy days were his lucky days. I have often thought of that. The world seems suddenly softer. Maybe, on these softer days, we are immersed in nature; we understand that the world is so much bigger than we are, and there is so much we cannot figure out. Yet, those beautiful raindrops fall from heaven, nurturing us, and the earth. God is good. He is always good.
rain in moderation is a blessing .. your son had an interesting way of looking at it 🙂
My son has always said that the rain brought him good luck. Perhaps, on rainy days he contemplated his blessings to a greater degree. Maybe, on a misty day, time slowed down just a bit. We feel very lucky when we stop and count our blessings! 🙂
How right you are – the rain does soften the world. The world always seems different to me after a good soaking. Cleansed and softened. Gentler. Quiet. In communion with God.
Yes! I love the way you put that…a good soaking. It is as if the world were scrubbed fresh and clean, ready for a new beginning. We are refreshed as well. The quietude restores us in marvelous ways!
Well said!
Just lovely! I like this very much. (And I know the feeling.)
Thank you! We all love those blue-sky sunny days, but rainy days are blessings too! The earth needs the rain, but so do we…in more ways than the obvious ones. 🙂
Oh, indeed!
A universal sound, Linda. Comfort and nourishment at the same time.
Yes! That is exactly right! Like tears, there is more to a raindrop than meets the eye.:)
Absolutely. 🙂🙂
🙂 🙂 🙂
Linda, your description of a summer rain had me pausing and feeling the ever-increasing rain drops. The images through your words are awesome!
Thank you! I appreciate your comment!!! The changes in the weather affect us deeply. The beauty around us is astounding! We are blessed in all the seemingly ordinary things, that are, in fact, extraordinary! 🙂
This is how we should view the storms and trials in life!
When we rest in God, and contemplate His many gifts, there is peace even in the midst of a storm. 🙂
