An Open Door

There lies within us a cathedral; we can choose to close the doors, or allow them to open wide.

The chambers within are vast, full of light, flooded by stain-glass windows where the sun shines through.

There are dusty corridors as well, places where the cobwebs have not been swept away.

Within the cathedral music plays, so soft at times, you can barely hear it.

Other times, the music is loud and spills out into the streets.

You feel the echo everywhere, a beating heart that resounds again and again, as if within a cave, but then exploding.

This cathedral is not a monastery, set apart from the world; it longs to be known, to be heard, to be loved.

There is only so much space in a life time of one hundred years; the hourglass is so steady.

And so, within this great cathedral, lies a deep yearning to be more, do more; from the depths of the dwelling, there comes a sigh.

Could it be that there is more, a cathedral built to last forever, stain-glass windows that become the sky?

It is the light that tells us so, the light that draws us in to open wide the doors, and let the Lord step in.

The cobwebs fade, the Son our only thought; what once was night has gone away.

There is only the cathedral, resplendent in array; there are no need of robes, our clothes will do this day.

All that matters is the open door, the heart we give away, the beating of our very souls, to our God of the cathedral.

Luke 19:10: “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost.”

  1. Absolutely love the depths of this.

    1. Thank you! I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  2. Whenever I’ve been inside a beautiful cathedral that impresses my eyes, it reminds me of Who I worship. The same happens when I find myself in mountain cathedrals. Loved the read. God’s grip – Alan

    1. I agree. God is at the center of the cathedral wherever it may be. It could be a mountaintop, or a forest, or the beach, beside the sea. Or it can be within ourselves, as scripture reminds us, a temple built for God to house the Holy Spirit.

  3. Beautifully written!

      1. In central Ohio, we are still experiencing summer weather . . . warm and dry. Nonetheless, I enjoy being outside, especially for early morning walks.

        1. In Virginia, we are enjoying summertime days also. The nights are much cooler, and the early morning as well. It is a beautiful season in this state!
