Stairway of Life

It isn’t always easy on the stairway of life; sometimes, the climb seems nearly impossible.

You do your best to hold onto the railing, and just keep going.

One measured step after another, and you make your way.

Every step tells a story; every step has a divine plan.

Each time you land, you are that much closer to the dream you imagined.

One day, someday, you look down, and marvel at how far you have come; the view from above is lovely.

It isn’t always easy on the staircase of life, but it certainly is a magnificent climb.

The trick is to take it one step at a time, and to treasure the stories as you go.

This is your very own storybook; it will account for all of your days.

May the storybook you carry to the top, be a work of art; may it be a love story to remember, the tale of a life well-lived.

Psalm 37:23: “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delighteth in his way.”

Linda Raha is a Christian writer who has kept a journal for a great many years. The journal entries are a mix of poems, reflections, and anecdotes on any number of topics. For Linda, the theme of the sea is a recurring one. Her love of the ocean and spending time there manifests itself in much of what she writes.

  1. This is lovely. I had many years of slogging steps through fibromyalgia. Finally finding God’s stairway out of the pain and fog.

    1. God is with us every step of the way! I am so glad you are feeling better! πŸ™‚

  2. Linda, you have no idea how the Lord just spoke to me through this message!! Wow!! Have Your way in our lives Lord!!

    1. The Lord works in mysterious ways! I often read someone’s blog and I think, “Oh my goodness, that is exactly what I needed to hear. I read so many wonderful inspirational blogs, and I thank God for each one of them…including yours!

      1. Abba is truly amazing! Keep sitting at His feet and sharing His words

        1. We are so blessed! Psalm 119:105: “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

  3. Love this! Linda, your analogies are beautiful and profound! We do need to enjoy each step. It may not be easy, but little by little we draw closer to our heavenly home, the best “story” of all! God bless you!

    1. Yes Melissa, the best story is yet to come, our arrival in our heavenly home, the top of the staircase. But every step along the way matters, and it matters to God. We ask God to bless all the moments of our life here that we may be a blessing to others. In the words of missionary CT Studd: “Only one life twill soon be past, only what’s done for Christ will last.”

  4. This is just beautiful, Linda! The stairway can sometimes seem steeper in these elder years, but you are right. From these later years, the view looking down is wondrous.

    1. We do not always understand why some steps are so much harder than others. Later, we see that the hard steps taught us things we needed to know. Like a piece of glass weathered by time, and the sea of life, we emerge as something new. Our rough edges become softer; we become a polished version of our former self.

      1. I love your sea glass metaphor for growing older!

        1. We are wiser, yes? The storms of life have weathered us; we are changed, but the beauty of the glass remains.

  5. Reading your post uplifted me and made me happy to think my life could be as you described.

    1. I am glad you found it uplifting! Life is such a precious gift; we must be open to the possibilities it offers. Matthew 9:26: “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

      1. Absolutely! I am thankful for the gift of life every time I wake up in the morning.

        1. God is so good to us! As we age, He gives us new gifts, new hopes, new joys. Our heavenly Father sees to our every need as though we were toddlers sitting upon His lap looking up to Him. He just adores His children!!! How blessed we are!

  6. You also have made quite a case for keeping a journal.

    1. Yes! There is nothing like keeping a journal! Even if you only jot down a couple of lines, everything becomes so much clearer when you write it down. It helps you see things in a brand-new light.

  7. Beautiful, Linda. Heaving ourselves up the steep inclines of life is rarely fun nor easy. Someday, we’ll reach the point where we can look down and back over the terrain covered. May that day be one of joy and satisfaction for us.

    1. Right here, right now He stands with us. We do not fight the good fight alone. John 10:10: “I have come that they may have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” Jesus gives us His joy now…today, and forever.

  8. I love the imagery you used here! Yes, life is like a stairway, leading us up and to our ultimate home. Sometimes the path is hard, but all we have to do is look down and see how far we’ve come, and we are hopeful. And if we look up and see where we are going, we are inspired!

    1. You are exactly right. We should be both hopeful and inspired. As scripture reminds us in Isaiah 40:31: “Those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength…”

  9. Beautifully written and imagined. The climb is tough at times, but the view is amazing the higher and more steps we climb. <3

    1. When we look back, the view is altogether different. We see how every step has changed us. We ‘grow’ through the changes and it deepens our experience. For myself, it has also deepened my faith in God; I see that He was there with me on the staircase guiding me every step of the way.

  10. a lovely sense of the journey we are all on and such wise advice … one step at a time and we will get there πŸ™‚

    1. Yes! The best way is one day at a time. Celebrating the little things each day seems to make all the difference. πŸ™‚

      1. gives us a much more positive outlook while keeping us in the moment, lovely <3
