One Day at a Time

It is easy enough to become overwhelmed in life, unless we follow a simple rule; we have to take it one day at a time. If we worry too far ahead about a situation, we defeat ourselves. Worry never really fixes anything, and it robs us of the joy each day holds.

Somehow, if we follow the rule God gave us to live each day as it comes, we live a better life. Moreover, we live a very good life, because we do not borrow trouble. A day is a gift we open and celebrate, come what may.

It is said that most of the things we worry about never come true. So, the best we can do is appreciate the wonder and beauty of any given day. There will always be difficulties and problems we cannot solve overnight. A problem usually looks different when we consider it from a number of perspectives; this always takes time.

I think that old advice about, ‘sleep on it’, when it comes to making a decision, is such sage advice. Often, we are so sure about something, but when we really think it over, we have a change of heart.

There is the very real possibility that the very thing we discern to be such a problem in our lives, turns out to be a blessing in disguise.

How many times have we looked back at a turbulent time in our lives, and it seemed a valley of despair…but, it was temporary! Later, we discover that the same valley taught us beautiful truths we could never have discovered otherwise.

How many times have we come to a mountain in our lives, and we feel we will never, ever, be able to climb it? And yet, with the help of God, we made every step to the highest pinnacle.

Our days on the earth may be a mix of sunshine and shadows, but when we begin each day anew, expectant and happy over that rising sun, the day goes better. When we know the mountain need not be climbed all in a single day, we can enjoy the passage of time and all the wonder each step holds.

Truth be told, the mountains and valleys have brought us to where we are today. The mountains and valleys have taught us about hope. God has journeyed with us since the day of our birth, and before of course, and He will be there for this passage, and forevermore.

Celebrate where you are right now. Remember that the ‘mist’ of not knowing all things is a blessing as well. I have always thought it a beautiful thing to see the fog hang heavy in the mountains. And when it lifts, the sun seems so incredibly bright. Funny though, the fog in itself is enchanting; you slow down long enough to contemplate the mysteries of life. Contemplation is a gift like no other; contemplation gives rise to gratitude.

Sometimes, we come to a place in our own lives where the fog seems to hang heavy, a cloud we cannot see our way through. We feel afraid. We feel discouraged.

God is there in the cloud that clings to those moments, to those days. For when it seems we cannot see, there is One who knows the way. There is One who has the vision of our lives in view, and His vision is always clear.

Yes, it is true that life is better when we follow one simple rule; take it one day at a time. In that span of twenty-four hours, God works miracles in our lives. There is a purpose to our comings and goings. There is a purpose to our journey, be it in the morning mist, or the deep of night. With prayer, and with hope in our hearts, every day is a treasure beyond compare.

“This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”: Psalm 118:24

  1. Beautiful and inspiring!

    1. Thank you! Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

  2. Very well said, each hurdle is a lesson! Great shots 🙂

worry and guilt are such Western/Christian concepts … Asians and eastern philosophy don’t have words for these two!

    1. There are 365 scripture verses that deal with fear, worry, and anxiety. Jesus does not want us to be afraid! On the contrary, we are to be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. We are conquerors through faith. (Romans 8:37) Also, in verse 1 John 4:18: “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.”

      1. that’s well covered 🙂

        1. 🙂 🙂 🙂

  3. Oh, Linda. You don’t know how hand-in-hand this post is to my new post dropping tomorrow afternoon. Well, I should say, related. The fog in the valley is hard to cut through. So well done. -Alan

    1. I am looking forward to your post! 🙂

  4. That is one of my favorite Bible verses!

    1. It is one of my favorites also!

  5. Linda, this was beautiful and wise and just what I needed to hear today! I have been wrestling with a difficult situation, praying, reading the Bible, seeking wise counsel. And my husband offered many of the suggestions you listed here. Even a day’s rest or a time of sleep can bring a break and a breakthrough in our perspective. Yes, this is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it! Bless you!

    1. I will keep you in my prayers. May you find peace in whatever you are going through. My dad used to tell me to write down all the pros and cons of a decision on a piece of paper…and then, pray. Listen to your heart. That is where the answers are. 🙂

  6. One day at a time is a good thing for me to remember. That is why my to do lists are one day at a time ;). Beautiful post, Linda.

    1. Thank you! One day at a time, one step at a time! 🙂 We all need to remind ourselves of this when we make up those to do lists.

  7. So true! Every day is a precious gift so embrace it.

    1. God is good, and we are so blessed with the gifts He bestows on us each and every day. 🙂
