New Year’s Wishes

There isn’t any snow yet, but if snowflakes were to fall

could they all be wishes, drifting, floating, swirling, like heavenly

dreams come true?

Could a New Year begin, a place to make fresh tracks in the snow,

a song within our hearts gently stirring?

Can we start a love story, with prayers ever on our lips,

that with God’s help, we can each make the world a better place?

I can see the snowflakes dancing, the winter stage set for new beginnings:

the wishes have no end, a blur of feathery wonder.

It is a soft place to land, these drifts of New Year bliss,

piled up with hopes, and dreams, and magical things to think about.

Let us walk in these snowy drifts together, let us celebrate God’s gifts of love and life,

and lacey winter days set apart, as if all the world were at peace for just a moment.

It is a new season, a New Year, and already the wishes are tumbling down on us;

It is as if the wishes were crafted by angels, designed with precision and grace.

The angels know things we cannot possibly know; they see a vision of what could be,

a frozen world thawing in springtime, love that heals broken hearts.

Snowy swans glide upon a winter lake, and we know they can take flight at any moment;

we watch them soar, understand the wonder of wings, and the chance to start yet again.

A New Year

It is almost time for a New Year to begin, a year full of endless possibilities. It is true enough that the world gives us much to be weary about, a load quite heavy to bear at times. We need not carry this load alone. God is ever- present and ever- ready to help us. This is the message of Christmas, that our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, was born in a lowly stable, and yet, He is the light of the world. This light extinguishes all darkness; it is a light that cannot fail, even when all seems dim.

I believe that within each of us there is a spark of heaven. When these sparks unite, it is a wondrous thing, as if a constellation of stars lit up the night sky. Yes, there is darkness, but God’s love has overcome it.

Like everyone else, I have many New Year’s wishes, but high on the list is a wish for each and every one of you reading this post today. If you are not already sure, I pray that you may know that God’s love and light is for you, His child. You are the bright spark that brings our Heavenly Father joy. You are the apple of His eye. May you dream a thousand new dreams, but may you know the One who fashioned your heart to dream at all, the One who loves you without end.

Happy New Year!

John 8:!2: “Again, Jesus spoke to them saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Luke 2: 10-14: “And the angel said to them, Fear not, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.”

  9. Have a great new years beginnings Linda. If snowflakes were wishes we would get a lot of them here. snowing now. To believe and follow Jesus like a child makes those snowflake/wishes possible.

  12. Linda, thank you for reminding me about the magic of snow, the fresh beginning it seems to create, the purity and light it brings. A gentle hush seems to fall upon the Earth upon its arrival – then, well at least in the UK, the usual chaos!

    Still a grey and cool start to the year here in England. Wishing you light, laughter and love for 2024 & always. Annika xx

    1. I wish you the same…light, laughter, and love! We have had a lot of grey here also…I do love snow, but none of that as yet. Even without the snow, there is the magic of the New Year itself…a chance to start again, to make a new beginning. May January bring you many blessings, snow or no snow! πŸ™‚

  14. Thank you for another BEAUTIFUL, thought-provoking post, Linda! I’ll have to pull this up and read it again tomorrow morning when we’re supposed to receive snow over a five-hour period–give or take. (I’ve written myself a reminder note!) Such heart-touching imagery you’ve created in your poem, considering each flake as a wish for heavenly dreams to come true. / With you, I pray that the spark of heaven within each person would respond to the Light of the world, Jesus Christ, and glow with the peace and joy of His presence!

    1. Thank you for your thoughtful comment!!! I hope you enjoy the snow! We have rain today…Our wishes are raindrops in Virginia! Whatever the weather, blessings abound, and we are settling into a New Year 2024 with high hopes and prayers for peace throughout the world.

      1. Well, the weather forecasters made much ado about nothing; we received a mere dusting!! But you’re right, whatever the weather, blessings abound! Today I’m thankful for delicious chicken soup–made by my husband!😁

  16. A beautiful reflection to start the new year and wonderful to read as we are in the middle of a snowstorm right now. I’m watching snowflakes fall outside my window and thinking of your words… β€œif snowflakes were to fall could they all be wishes, drifting, floating, swirling, like heavenly dreams come true?” Great timing for me to read today and as you wrote we are β€œ the bright spark that brings our Heavenly Father joy. Blessings to you in 2024. I’m hoping to read more here and hopefully write more this year.
