The River Within

There is a river that flows within you; it knows no end.

It began on the day that you were born; you opened your eyes and you were part of a family.

Then, your world expanded; you made a friend; you fell in love.

The river ebbed and flowed, seeking only to grow stronger, day by day.

Heartbreak, yes? Of course.

When a river runs deep, fathoms deep, there is a fall into the unknown.

You discover one day that the river runs to the sea; your journey is not in vain.

Tears glisten upon that open sea, raindrops of love, cast down from heaven.

You look to where the rain has fallen, spilled recklessly within your heart.

You understand that all the rushing water is moving you forward, one day at time.

This river flows for all eternity, crystal clear and sparkling, a tonic for the weary.

In time, you come to know that little else matters, besides this river that leads you home.

The Lord of the river calls you by name; He sets you free, and speaks His peace upon you.

There is a river that flows within you; it is a river without end.

You stretch your hands up to touch the sky, searching in all that blue space for answers; but all along, the answers were right there within your heart.

Only in the river rush do you find your way; only there, do you find your life, raindrops and teardrops, the pathway to heaven etched upon your soul.

Psalms 46:2-4: “Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah. There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the the most High.”

Linda Raha is a Christian writer who has kept a journal for a great many years. The journal entries are a mix of poems, reflections, and anecdotes on any number of topics. For Linda, the theme of the sea is a recurring one. Her love of the ocean and spending time there manifests itself in much of what she writes.

  1. For some reason, just reading the words a river within brought tears to my eyes.

    1. Love is the most powerful force that there is; it can bring us to tears. When we contemplate the river of God’s love that flows from Him and through us, it is an incredible thing. We do have tears of joy!

  2. That was so beautiful….and full of truth and hope.

    1. Our hope is not in vain. We are living through tough times, but we are not alone. God is here in our midst at all times…good or bad.

  3. This is a very comforting extended metaphor.

    1. God is the author of love: His love flows continuously and without end. It flows through us when we are open to the mighty river of life that He offers. It is a great comfort…to be so deeply loved despite our flaws. 1 John:19: “We love because He first loved us.”

  4. Beautiful piece of writing. Thank you for sharing, Linda.

    1. Thank you Jenny! I waited some time before sharing this. Some things we write are things we feel on such a deep emotional level that they are hard to let go of.

    1. Thank you! 🙂 🙂 🙂

  5. Beautiful, Linda. Such descriptive images. God’s grip – Alan

    1. Thank you! I took this picture of the river in Asheville, North Carolina. It was such a beautiful place…time passes, but the memory of some places inspire you again and again.

      1. lol you are too kind, my poetry is ok but this is lovely!

        1. Your poems are wonderful…like a field of sunflowers. 🙂 You know the quote, “Those that bring sunshine to others cannot keep it from themselves.”(James Matthew Barrie) I like to think your poems spill out into the world, sun-lit seeds of hope, and that all that sunshine reflects right back at you.

          1. wow Linda you really do have a poetic way with words … more poems please? And thanks for your extremely generous compliment 🙂

    1. Thank you! God does heal and restore us; only He can calm our worries and bring us peace. He is the Lord of the river itself and it will never run dry. When I am afraid, I focus on the river of His love and I let it wash over me.

  9. Such a beautiful poem with truth, comfort and hope! I loved these lines:
“This river flows for all eternity, crystal clear and sparkling, a tonic for the weary.

In time, you come to know that little else matters, besides this river that leads you home.

The Lord of the river calls you by name; He sets you free, and speaks His peace upon you.”
